This installment of the Little Critter books is called The School Play and focuses on the main critter who is unnamed as he is casted into the school play. Gina and Mercer Mayer created an easy to read story for young readers with vivid and worthwhile pictures throughout. The plot focuses on the eldest critter child and many young readers can relate to having siblings, whether they are older or younger than them. This is considered a fantasy book as the animals in this story are personified and it is modern because there is no mysterious or mystical reasoning for an action or event to occur in the book. There are many sight words and the pages are not crowded with text. Young readers would be able to individually read this book with practice as it is a Little Golden Book. The main idea behind the story is to relax and not worry about the thoughts of others. Readers will see Crido become afraid of speaking in the play, but he is reminded of the support and love he feels from his family and remembers his lines at the last moment. He was not worried about what the audience though as he had remembered what truly mattered and relaxed. ( )
