This book is very well done history book for children. A hard story, written in simple language.

“Who were the Kinder and why did they need to be saved? Who helped the children? What happened after they were saved? . . . This is the story of the Kindertransport.”

Pages contain text of the story, plus photographs of some of the children, documents, letters, and a box (“Miriam’s Story”, etc.) with small snippets of stories pertaining to each chapter’s heading from the eight featured children.

Chapters cover an introduction to the eight children whose stories are featured within the overall story of the kindertransport, an overview of the things happening in Germany that made people want to rescue the children, getting ready, saying good-bye, and the journey. Also, their lives in Britain, what happened to them after the war was over, and a chapter on People Who Helped, with short bios of the organizers of the Kindertransport. With Words to Know, a map, a timeline and a Note to Parents and Teachers, this is a great resource book for teaching children about WWII. ( )

While this book appears to be geared towards a younger reader, it isn't watered down to the point where it was uninteresting for an adult. The stories and images were heart wrenching and well-assembled. I would recommend this as a good book for anyone who is interested in the kindertransport, but who doesn't want to delve into a more academic history book.

This is a good overview of the Kindertransport itself. Included are the events leading up to it and how the children were actually transported plus some about their lives during and after the war. I particularly liked that Hodge included a list of other books for both children and adults and wish that my local library had some of them.

A good introduction for both children and adults to this subject with lots of great illustrations. Recommended.

"...The men and women who organized and ran the Kindertransport were unbelievably brave and tenacious, and thanks to their efforts, thousands of children were relocated to safety before the war really began...Hodge peppers the book with anecdotes about the Kindertransport experience from eight different people who were child refugees through this program...

...The brevity of the book along with the overall tone leads me to believe that Rescuing the Children is really meant for roughly middle-grade children (well, that and the fact that Hodge is a children's author), but the content is not watered-down to the point where the message would be lost to older readers. As an adult, I know I got a lot out of reading this, and although it's not the kind of book I'd use as a source on an academic paper, I would certainly recommend it as an excellent jumping-off point for anyone interested in learning about this topic in particular or about the Holocaust and World War II in general."
