An alright introduction, about a war that isn't discussed as much as other ones in US history. Caroline is very much a daddy's girl (but not in a negative way) and wants to be a captain of her own ship one day, historical period be damned. ( )

4 1/2 - O received Caroline for Christmas along with this book. We enjoyed reading the story and were able to talk about where it took place as I was born on the shores of Lake Ontario and went to school in Kingston where Caroline's father was being held. In addition O has travelled there many times to visit Grandma. I liked that all the main characters are pictured at the front of the book and there is a map of the area as well. We learned how to make a Flemish Knot from this book which was fun. The story is well written, interesting and somewhat historical. My only complaint would be how short each book is. Less than a hundred pages of fairly big type. Two or three books barely makes the equivalent of one novel (say a Little House one). Thus we are getting the rest of the series from the library. Just a bit pricey to buy individually when we can read one book it in a sitting. ( )

While this is not my favorite book, this is still a pretty good book. The main message of this book is girls can be courageous and that every girl should believe in herself as she can do wonders. The characters in this book are believable, the illustrations, while there are only a few, encourage the story along and the language plays off the images. With the characters, especially Caroline herself, I felt like I was there with her, watching the plot go down. She acts her age of 11 years old with the way she speaks and her mannerisms, like interrupting people and not holding back her feelings when she speaks to someone. For the illustrations, even though there were only a few, they fit well into the story as they showed clips of the story that was currently going on. On one page, it shows Caroline talking to her mom while in the story, that is what is being said and is happening in the scene. The language plays off the illustrations and the characters, as it is age appropriate and very descriptive. One example of this is when Caroline describes the smell of her dad's pipe tobacco. This book shows how a girl of Caroline's age would have acted during the War of 1812, and it is a book I would recommend. ( )

In my opinion this is a good book. One reason I like this book is because of it's adventurous plot. Caroline, a young girl in America is shaken up when her father is taken as prisoner to the British during the war of 1812. Through out the story, readers are filled with suspense from aspects of war, loss, and survival. Another reason I like this book is the well developed characters. Caroline for example, is a young ten year old girl who is full with ambition. Young readers can easily connect with Caroline through her hopes and fears. Caroline is also developed to be well like by all. She is extremely helpful to her village in their time of need. I believe the main message in this story is sometimes you have to put others needs in front of your own. Even after everything she has been through, Caroline is still faced with a sacrifice to be made in order to save her village. ( )

Meet Caroline is a part of the beloved American Girl series. Caroline brings the war of 1812 to life for young girls. Through Caroline girls can learn how to face their fears and to be brave. Caroline's story brings history to life!
