For anyone interested in learning about snakes, this is an excellent book. I originally took this book out of the library to share with my four-year-old grandson, but after I brought it home, I read through all of it right way. Some of the material was familiar, but I was most enchanted by the amazing snake photographs. Many of these had the snakes enlarged up to three times their usual size so many details can be seen on their bodies. At the end of the book is not only a glossary but also a delightful narrative by the author about how he photographs snakes. I can't wait for my grandson to discover this book in my home! ( )

Snakes is a typical information book that walks early readers through basic facts about all different kinds of snakes and how they live. The facts are easy to read and contain simplified vocabulary so that an early reader could appreciate this book on its own without needing an adult to help clarify. The photographs are bright and up close, making the snakes really pop and attract further inspection. A student brought this into my preschool once, and the kids were torn on whether it was the coolest book ever or the scariest book ever because the snakes were so eye-catching and vivid in all of their actions, including attacking and eating prey.
