This collection features tales of horror by Brian James Freeman that deal with both real and supernatural terrors, exploring unfamiliar territories within the heart and mind, uncovering our darkest demons in the most unexpected places: * Erin and Russ discover something their beloved "Pop-Pop" hid away in his attic that was never meant to see the light of day again. * A lonely young man's unusual job takes a heavy toll on him in "Answering the Call." * In "The Final Lesson," a mild-mannered high school teacher might not be able to control himself when he learns the truth about his wife's death. * Patty knows everyone makes mistakes in life, and when it comes to "Loving Roger," she wants to fix the errors of her ways, no matter how high of a price she might need to pay. * A family man discovers monsters taking over the world in "Among Us," but he also learns that a chosen few can fight back--if they're willing to sacrifice everything they love the most. * As "Not Without Regrets" opens, Sarah is remembering her grandmother's motto: make every day count and live without regrets because no one gets out alive. * Finally, in "What They Left Behind," a young man discovers something lurking in the basement of an abandoned office building... something that is evil, and very, very hungry. These stories showcase Brian James Freeman's dazzling virtuosity and imagination as his characters descend into the depths of madness. Discover why Richard Matheson called his writing "spooky stuff" and why Stewart O'Nan said his stories have "great velocity and impact." There is darkness all around us, but Brian James Freeman isn't afraid to shine a light onto the things that scare us the most.… (meer)

Relinquish your imagination to five tales of horror by master storyteller Brian James Freeman. Included in this collection is a demon waiting to escape, a music teacher gone temporarily mad, monsters taking over the world, an escape from an asylum, and phone calls from the other side. These stories contain abandoned buildings, creepy basements, stormy nights, supernatural forces, and lots of darkness.

This is horror at its very best. These vivid tales were written to scare the reader, and they do. You will be compelled to get up in the middle of the night to check the doors and windows and make sure there’s nothing hiding under the bed or in the closets. Best read on a dark, stormy night, this is a very quick read that will leave you longing for more.

The Bottom Line: All of these short stories have been previously published; however, the stories complement each other so well they were meant to be together. Each story takes the reader on a short journey into darkness where your imagination takes over and gets the better of you. Freeman builds suspense like few authors can, and Glenn Chadbourne’s pen and ink illustrations heighten the horror. Read this collection for your enjoyment and fright. Very highly recommended for fans of horror.

As an avid reader this book hit all the marks for me. The mood was set, the characters came to life, and the bumps in the night (you should only read this at night), became real.

This collection of stories is filled with suspense and terror that produces high-tension and fast paced reading. An equal measure of reality was combined with scares and what-if’s to create a balanced group of tales.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of horror and would strongly encourage fans of suspense and drama to give this a shot.

Nice piece of writing and well worth the cost of admission. ( )

In More Than Midnight, Brian James Freeman presents five short stories that lurk at the edges of the reader’s darkest psychological corners waiting for the moment to jump out and terrify. What lies within the shadows might simply be one’s own imagination or, at its worse, an ancient evil.
In “What They Left Behind, ” Freeman uses the classic haunted, abandoned building motif to start the collection out on the first freefall of his eerie and imaginative rollercoaster. After purchasing an old warehouse, two men search its depths for its power source. As they search they recall the deadly fire that had killed all of the building’s occupants years earlier. As they descend deeper and deeper into the building, the events of the fire become more and more real.
“Answering the Call” ends the collection with a frightful scare, as a young man who works for a local mortician sets upon his strange task. As an older woman leaves to grieve at her husband’s funeral, the young mortician’s assistant locks himself in the deceased’s office and waits for a phone call. Upon receiving the call, the young man must battle against an unseen supernatural force for the peace and well-being of those the deceased left behind.
Each story within More Than Midnight forces the reader into a psychologically uncomfortable situation as Freeman deftly maneuvers each narrative through the darkest corners of the reader’s imagination. As the author of several intensely psychological and supernatural stories, Brian James Freeman has skillfully provided a collection that will keep the reader guessing up to the last page of each story. In the introduction to this book, Michael Koyta promises us that we will receive the scares that we're here for, but will get a little more. He nailed it. Brian Freeman is a terrific writer touching on the humanity in all of us, and at the same time delving into the darker aspects of our nature. He sets the stage for each of his stories within the first few paragraphs. You're there. Then the creepies start to insinuate themselves and finally - full blown horror. Enjoyed this immensely. My one disappointment is that it ended too soon. ( )

I read this collection of 5 all in one sitting. They weren’t long stories, but were very imaginative. I’m not normally into reading short stories, but this one kept me interested all the way through. My favorite was “The Final Lesson”. I had thought the story was going one way, but then Brian took in a different and nasty direction! It made me smile to myself at the end, which is how I usually judge whether a horror book/story is good or not. ( )
