Mama Played Baseball is a historical fiction story about a women providing for her family by playing baseball. Her daughter and her parents admire and encourage her by coming to as many of her games as possible. This story gives a quick snippet of an important part of American history, the Homefront during World War Two. This story shows young children how women supported the war effort by replacing empty positions in the workforce. This set precedent in allowing women to have jobs, and this story shows the start of this momentous transition. ( )

This book takes place during WWII. This was a time when women had to turn to roles that men typically did to provide for their families. The protagonist was the little girl, but the book is about her mother who tried out for the women’s baseball league and made the team. One day the mother surprised her daughter at the bus station when her father came home from the war. I would use this book in a unit about WWII or families to show how people take on different roles when they are needed too. ( )

This story is set in the 1940's during World War II, narrated by a young girl named Amy, who is the main character in the story. This was not exactly mentioned in the story, but Amy's Grandfather mentioned taking part in World War I, and Amy's dad took part in the second. As a child during the war, Amy dealt with her Father being away. She had her grandparents and her Mama living at home with her. Amy would play baseball in the front yard with her Mama, which eventually lead to her Mama trying out for baseball, and she made the team. This book talks about how life was during the war, and proves that women can be just as talented as men in sports. This book can create a positive message to young readers to pursue their dreams and believe in themselves. Not only that, this book can be beneficial in a history lesson, lessons about women's roles in society, and equality. ( )

Mama played baseball is a story of a girl and her mom trying to enjoy life as much as possible while dad is at war. Mom needs a job but she doesnt want to settle for just any job, she wants to follow her dreams and become a baseball player. This book represents how life went on during the war. It also reminds us to follow our dreams no matter what. This book also highlights women in sports and inches closer to equality between men and women. ( )

Amy has a dad who is fighting in the war, and a mom who has a job playing baseball. Amy loves helping her mom practice baseball, but she doesn't understand how it can be a job. Baseball is a game, but Amy's mom shows her it can be a job by playing for the women's professional league. Amy and her grandparents go to all of the local games to support her mom when she plays. Eventually Amy's dad comes home and they get to be a family all together again. The book does not say what world war Amy's dad is fighting in, but Amy's grandpa tells her that he fought in the first war, and her dad was fighting in the second, so we can infer that it is taking place during WWII. Also, the first women's professional league was not a thing until the 1940's, so that also helps us pinpoint a time when the story is taking place. Amy is the main character in the book, and all she wants to do is help her mom practice baseball, spend time with her family, and wait for her dad to come home. The ending of the book ends on a happy note with her dad coming home, but it also could have ended sadly because a lot of soldiers did not come home after the war. One thing that stood out to me was that they included they had welcome home sign inside the house when Amy's dad got home. In the authors note, David Adler made a point to say that signs were kept inside because not everybody's solders had returned home yet, and some had died in battle, so it was kept out of sight of the neighbors homes.
