Fabulous source documents for understanding what motivated the Framers to write what they did-- and what they meant in the context of their time -- particularly with regard to the Bill of Rights. ( )

Fascinating for the first couple of hundred pages; then it's easy to lose interest. Still, it shows the real passion people felt about how the United States should be governed. Most of the arguments against federalism can be seen to have had a lot of truth to them--the loss of states rights and sovereignty that these writers predicted has largely come to pass. Of course, it is possible to see that as a very good thing. The value of a book like this is to be able to go to the source. There are a lot of current historians who write very well, but our founding fathers wrote pretty well too, and it does make you proud to be a citizen of a country started by men who cared about learning and language. Another excellent collection from the Library of America. Very useful, and often consulted. ( )
