Het is indrukwekkend als een wetenschapper zich bezighoudt met spiritualiteit en/of de mogelijkheden van een verruimd bewustzijn (in Nederland bijv. Pim van Lommel), maar het is nog meer bijzonder als een neurochirurg zijn eigen BDE weergeeft. De auteur beschrijft het verloop van zijn schijnbaar dodelijke ziekte op de IC van het ziekenhuis en de reacties daarop van zijn familie en vrienden, afgewisseld met zijn eigen ervaringen tegelijkertijd in een andere dimensie. Vervolgens beschrijft hij zijn revalidatie en hoe zijn BDE hem heeft veranderd. Het doel van zijn boek is juist om het naast elkaar laten bestaan van de wetenschap en spiritualiteit te bevorderen. De hoeveelheid informatie over de familie is nogal overbodig. Met voorwoord van de genoemde Pim van Lommel, een uitgebreide literatuurlijst (voornamelijk in het Engels) en o.a. neurologische hypothesen als bijlage achterin het boek. De ziekte van de auteur was zeldzaam, maar de BDE is dat ook: zijn ervaringen zijn anders, dus voor geïnteresseerden in het onderwerp is er genoeg nieuws te lezen.
