This was quite a good collection, less of a mixed bag than volume 2 that I read last Christmas, this was mostly full of amusing, heartwarming and interesting pieces, though some had a pretty tenuous connection to most people's ideas of a Christmas story. The highlights for me were Dostoevsky's The Heavenly Christmas Tree (a tragic story very like Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl); Dickens's Christmas at Dingley Dell (two chapters from the Pickwick Papers, including the story within a story of the Goblin who stole a Sexton, a precursor of the story redemption later perfected in A Christmas Carol); F Scott Fitzgerald's very funny tale of Christmas charity backfiring, A Luckless Santa Claus; Joseph Conrad's more serious Christmas Day at Sea, O Henry's rueful but heartwarming The Gift of the Magi; and Jack London's totally non-Christmassy but very bleak and dramatic The Devil's Dice Box. The collection concluded with the full version of the famous anonymous poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, published in 1823. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
