There are many books that deal with the Vietnam War, but what is remarkable and unique about this work is that for the first time the stories of those who served and those who chose various routes not to serve are collected in one volume. You will read about a man whose mother hid his draft notice in the misguided but loving hope that she could protect him only to make his service inevitable. You will learn of the heroin addiction that resulted for a man who sought escape from the awful deeds he witnessed and perpetrated in Vietnam. Stories of those who fled to Canada and what awaited them there are included along with interviews with those who went to jail to express their deep commitment to ending the war. The last chapter chronicles the challenges and struggles of "Those who Loved, Counseled and Consoled" and the stories of several women who accompanied their man to Canada as well as one who began a draft counseling center in Northampton are told. The lottery, of course, features prominently as many had their course of action affected by their number. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
