This is an enjoyable late work from Carnac, one of a few which don't feature any of her three series detectives. In this one the detection is done by Kit Riddle, a young CID man, and his friend Robert Forth whose father is a local policeman. The setting is rural Derbyshire, and the crime occurs during an extremely thick fog - an anonymous phone calls leads to the discovery of a body which seems to have been a hit-and-run victim. Because of the weather it is impossible to move the corpse very far, so it's taken to a local disused church - which conveniently then burns down before any further investigation can be done, Eventually, after another death and a couple of suspicious accidents, the detective pair track down the criminal - but one of them really does behave in a ridiculously reckless manner, one of the book's flaws. Another is that it's not clear if the killer could have been convicted if they hadn't effectively confessed. However, it's still a good read, if not quite this writer's best work.
