The Oceanic is sailing from Southampton, with stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland, before proceeding to New York. This voyage will be particularly important to have a detective on board because noted American financier JP Morgan will be embarking at Cherbourg after a successful shopping spree in Paris. His collection of art, books and other antiques will be tempting for any thief. Then there's the usual sort of petty crime on board ship, and because George and Genevieve seem to attract trouble, there's also a murder... This was another undemanding mystery, easily completed in a morning. However, the scene where Genevieve decides to risk searching Jonathan Killick's cabin alone, without a lookout, felt out of character for her (it was imprudent, to say the least), and of COURSE he was going to find her in the cabin. And that's not the place she wanted to be after he had been basically stalking her for most of the trip. He very nearly succeeded in raping her, but for the timely arrival of the purser. That scene was highly upsetting and struck a discordant note with the rest of the book, and is the reason I've rated this 3.5 instead of the 4 it would otherwise have received.
