"Most folks aren't forced by court order to attend a library-book discussion group, but that's just what happens to B and B proprietor and ex-Manhattanite Bea Cartwright, hippy cat lover Chandra Morrisey, and winery owner Kate Wilder after a small-town magistrate has had enough of their squabbling. South Bass, an island on Lake Erie, is home to an idyllic summer resort, but these three ladies keep disturbing the peace. The initial book choice is Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, and that sets their mouths to watering. The Orient Express is the island's newest Chinese restaurant. They might not agree about much, but the ladies all love the orange chicken on the menu. But their meal is spoiled when the restaurant's owner, Peter Chan, has the bad fortune of getting murdered. Now, with Christie as their inspiration, the League of Literary Ladies has a real mystery to solve...if they can somehow catch a killer without killing each other first."--P. [4] of cover.… (meer)

I was attracted to the mention of the Orient Express although in this case it is a Chinese restaurant. The first sentence is If it weren't for Jerry Garcia peeing in my pansies, I never would have joined the League of Literary Ladies. Jerry Garcia is a cat. I dislike the use of the word "ladies", but the book was ok. It was fairy fluffy with a little too much school girl crushes stuff, but over all I liked it. It isn't at the top of my list although the author uses clever titles for her books such "Tale of Two Biddies" & "And Then there were Nuns.".

My reading now ventures to an island off the north of Ohio floating in Lake Erie. Kylie Logan writes a series with three feuding neighbors forced into forming a book club as punishment for their quarrelsome attitudes. The group meets and quickly jumps into a murder investigation like the book for the first meeting, Murder on the Orient Express. Mayhem at the Orient Express lumbers into a cozy mystery, but I wish that recipes followed the story. The story entertains with a cast that parallels Agatha Christie’s cast. The author shows a definite love of felines, as a cat opens and closes the story. The setting plays a huge part in the story, as a monster snowstorm plummets the island and severs all communication with the mainland. The three hateful neighbors, joined by a minor cast of friends, begin to form friendships and understanding. A lovely way to spend a day with hints to Agatha and Hercule Poirot. ( )

Kylie has a knack for constructing busy, crowded scenes. there can be several people in a scene and all the details are fluid and coherent. Her sense of humor is sharp - some jokes almost escape the reader if not careful.

This series, about three squabbling ladies who are put together for a bookclub, become witnesses to a possible murder, on an island with a small community. After a tremendous blizzard takes out most of the power on the island, the residents all conjure together at the local inn, which is run by one of the ladies from the bookclub. The story comes to life with all the different people and suspects - the relationships and romantic tensions.

At the end of this book is a preview of a different mystery series by Kylie - The Chili Cookoff mysteries. ( )
