( ) Living deep in a forest, Beaufils has never seen a human being other than his mother. After her death, however, he must venture out into the world on a quest to find his father, a knight at King Arthur's court. Along the way, he is drawn into several other people's quests, among them Galahad's quest to achieve the Holy Grail. In this eighth installment of The Squire's Tales, Gerald Morris again ably and humorously retells Arthurian legends both well-known and obscure, while adding his own elements and flair. This volume, however, is more serious in tone, as the major source material is a religious allegory and as the end of King Arthur's reign is foreshadowed for those familiar with the traditional story. 'The Quest of the Fair Unknown' is notable for the development of Beaufils, who gains experience of the world in a believable way while never losing the innocence he begins with. An author's note at the end of the volume explains the novel's sources and historical contexts. This book is recommended for middle schoolers who enjoy fantasy or humorous adaptations of the Matter of Britain. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
