In Mexican tradition, one day of the year belong to the dead: on November 2, they are granted celestial permission to visit friends and relatives on earth. On that day the entire country is given over to fiesta: tombs are adorned with flowers; altars are built featuring marigolds, paper cut-outs, candles, and incense; loaves in the shape of dolls are baked in the memory of dead children; and "absent" guests are served special foods in elaborate dishes.
