Thank goodness for a buddy read with Bubu , Isabella, & Joanna or this would just be sitting, an empty five star review. I couldn't help myself though and just breezed through this one. The review isn't really spoiling a lot, but enough---keeping it hidden for sake of b-r.

Petulant, rude, arrogant assholes. I love them. They are really easy to get wrong, however.

Since I first read Moonglow, I was really curious about Jack Talent. I can’t say Mary Chase made the same impression on me, honestly, but I loved Talent for his loyal guarding of Daisy even if he thought it silly, or it hurt his pride. Similar to his assignment to Winston. Generally, how Talent loved Ian made me really like him, and we know even if he’s acting like a shit, well, Kristen Callihan isn’t going to give a us a true asshole of a hero.

In Shadowdance, we find that Jack’s just reaching full maturity into his powers at 26. That’s all I’ll say about that, because risk of spoiling is too high. We also know his relationship to Mary is contentious at best, he’s thrown himself into his work and he is Broken. A broken, loyal, asshole? Layer on top of this his constant exclamatory swearing, which I just adore, the fact that every so often you aren’t sure what he says should hurt Mary or make her swoon-frankly she wasn’t sure either. A guy that saves you from a train and knows he can’t “take what isn’t offered” and “arousal does not mean consent.” And one that doesn’t much care for society’s sex roles but understands them…I could go on and on. I mean he called himself “Revenge” and I pretty much wanted to lick his wings. And in the end, or was it really alll along (apples, hello) he’s ridiculously sweet.

Mary Chase was equally interesting. Usually even, Jack has the unique talent to get under her skin and irritate her. You find yourself wishing for her that they would just clear the air, or that you could knock her over the head and say “he’s teasing you like he’s a little boy because he loves you.” But she was ‘steel and silk’ to borrow a phrase from the book, and I think that her character reflected the smooth, soft feminine side of her backed by the woman that would kill for Jack. The fact that she maintains the antagonistic relationship, with no idea why, while allowing him his dignity from being the one that found him in Winterblaze - in other words without resorting to cheap, hurtful tactics was pretty impressive.

I love this couple’s bickering and their growth together. I appreciated that they were pretty forthright once they decided to make a relationship of it, heartbreaking though the scene may be-and the scene after. I also really enjoyed with these two people with complicated, traumatic events in their past and who were both young dealing with consent in such a satisfactory way. It wasn’t smooth, but it was fumbling, emotional, and loving. The intensity of their devotion and sense of belonging to one another wouldn’t work in just any book with just any couple, but it does here. So well.

Not to mention, I think this book has my favorite non-romance-related plot.

Complicated plot, dark and twisted, which kept it from being a 4 star. ( )

My favorite book in the series so far! Loved the weaving of the traumatized heroine AND hero in this! So excited for Holly and Will's book!!!!! ( )

Shadowdance
4.5 Stars

As regulators for the SOS (Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals), Jack Talent and Mary Chase are tasked with keeping the existence of supernatural beings from the general public. Unfortunately, someone is killing their kind in very gruesome and very public ways. Forced into a partnership despite their shared animosity, Mary and Jack must work together to defeat a diabolical enemy whose nefarious plans may well result in their deaths.

This installment of Kristen Callihan’s Darkest London series has so many of my favorite elements: An intense love/hate relationship, an intensely tortured hero with a heart-wrenching past who doesn’t think himself worthy of being loved, a fierce and independent heroine not willing to put up with the hero’s BS, an incredibly smarmy villain who gets his just deserts not to mention detailed world building, a nerve-wracking plot and solid secondary characters.

My one small caveat is that Jack and Mary’s emotional tug of war went on a tad too long but the ultimate resolution to their relationship is exceedingly satisfying.

All in all, a fantastic addition to an entertaining series and the next book featuring Will Thorne and Holly Evernight is shaping into a real doozy. ( )
