All of his books written about his time and adventures in China are well worth the time and effort to read. This volume is a compilation of stories. Hessler does not wantonly flatter China in any way. He is blunt and candid about Chinese cultural proclivities and Communist Party buffoonery. While showing the best side of the culture and people where it is due. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML: Full of unforgettable figures and an unrelenting spirit of adventure, Strange Stones is a far-ranging, thought-provoking collection of Peter Hessler's best reportageâ??a dazzling display of the powerful storytelling, shrewd cultural insight, and warm sense of humor that are the trademarks of his work. While Hessler's subjects and locations vary, subtle but deeply important thematic links bind these piecesâ??the strength of local traditions, the surprising overlap between apparently opposing cultures, and the powerful lessons drawn from individuals who straddle different worlds Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

The author is very good at telling a story.
Most take place in China, there is a great story about uranium in Colorado but there is nothing that binds these stories together. It’s as if he had a contractual obligation for delivering a book and slapped this one together, from what he wrote in the past. ( )
