JERSEY CITY WESTBOUND is a photographic essay of about 120 color photographs, many full page bleeds, on the commuter operations of the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Reading that were terminated in 1967 as a result of a restructuring of their routes. Prior to 1967, both railroads terminated their New York operations at a harborside terminal in Jersey City, with ferry operations bringing the commuters to Manhattan. The cost of maintaining the ferries was prohibitive, so with the help of the State of New Jersey & the Penn Central Railroad the trains were rerouted at Aldene over the Lehigh Valley Railroad to Penn. Station, Newark. All of the passenger operations that had been conducted east of Aldene were terminated & the communities of Jersey City, Bayonne & Elizabeth along with the branches to Newark, the Shore, & the Mainline came to an end. This book serves several audiences: First, is the railroad enthusiast & Second, the person interested in local history & Third, the student interested in Americana & Lastly, the photographic hobbyist who enjoys studying good photographic work.
