Although she is deaf, she has a unique “sixth sense,” just like her Aunt Dahlia who raised her. Lily-Rose relies on her hearing dog, Max, to alert her to certain sounds or dangers. There is something about the apartment and her landlord that makes Lily-Rose feel uncomfortable. For one thing, someone keeps calling her phone. Then she discovers cameras in the apartment. When she confronts her landlord, Dietrich, he tells her he had them installed to watch contractors when they were in to do repairs, but that he would remove them immediately. He doesn’t and Lily-Rose soon suspects he is also monitoring her computer. The writer gives the reader the “ghost’s” POV as Sue Young tries to contact Lily-Rose. Sue Young was a refugee from Southeast Asia, and in addition to the history of the Hmong culture, the story is also filled with tidbits about Native American culture and life on a reservation. Lily-Rose’s talents are believable as well as Sue’s grief in not being buried in her homeland. Lily’s curiosity about Dietrich’s past and her eagerness to discover how Sue died place her in danger. Lily finds she has a talent for detective work which makes this reader wonder if the author has a series in mind. One would only hope. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
