Sequel to Dirty SecretA Cole McGinnis Mystery For ex-cop turned private investigator Cole McGinnis, each day brings a new challenge. Too bad most of them involve pain and death. Claudia, his office manager and surrogate mother, is still recovering from a gunshot, and Cole's closeted boyfriend, Kim Jae-Min, suddenly finds his teenaged sister dumped in his lap. Meanwhile, Cole has his own sibling problemsâmost notably, a mysterious half brother from Japan whom his older brother, Mike, is determined they welcome with open arms. As if his own personal dramas weren't enough, Cole is approached by Madame Sun, a fortune-teller whose clients have been dying at an alarming rate. Convinced someone is after her customers, she wants the matter investigated, but the police think she's imagining things. Hoping to put Sun's mind at ease, Cole takes the case and finds himself plunged into a Gordian knot of lies and betrayal where no one is who they are supposed to be and Death seems to be the only card in Madame Sun's deck.… (meer)

The story of Cole and Jae progresses smoothly and intensely with insane twists and red herrings as a new action/thriller emerges and adds to the saga. Cole takes on the case an elderly Fortune Teller brings to him but won't charge her because he thinks she has some of her wires crossed. Then he gets embroiled in the case because it is more real than anyone can believe! The massive plot twist at the end made me crazier!
Voice actor Greg Tremblay is absolutely perfect to interpret these wonderful characters. ( )

3,5 stars

As always, I like very much Rhys's engrossing prose and her lyrical vein put in Cole's mouth, a sentimental without reserve, although perhaps this time he go too far and sounded a bit sappy (my rating lost half a star for this reason)

As to the development of the relation, with the open admission of Jae of his love for Cole, finally I feel that we are talking about an established couple and I no longer have that recondite sensation that Cole loves more than what he is loved.

Ichiro! God, I love Ichi, I hope that will be a story for him... with Bobby, maybe?

Sadly I took out of my rating a additional star for the flaws that I found this time in the suspense plot. Personally I like it when the author offers the clues during the story but so well merged with the plot that I come to an end without realizing who is the murderer. In this story that did not happen, first there are no clues that follow a logic and lead to the culprit, but besides an appreciation about the "correction" of the subject was enough for make me think on the spot that I was in front of the killer. And the finding, comings and goings of so many children neither is consistent. Mostly the case seems too odd and incredible to me.

I think that I would have preferred in this occasion that the story focused much more in Cole, Jae and the recurrent characters, so rich and varied, and that the mystery plot only appeared tangentially.

Please, tell me if my Engish is wrong.

Cole-ah gets in a lot of trouble, the series. This one's puzzle is complex and the new characters are just as interesting as the established ones. Absolutely read these in order for best effect.

What I am enjoying about these is, in no particular order, the slow burn for Jae, the humor, the different culture(s), the trouble Cole gets into, and that he doesn't mean things to go bad, he'd rather not be hurt. But he needs to do his job. And all the characters. And the cat. :) ( )

Private investigator Cole McGinnis can never seem to catch a break for long. On the heels of his last major case which led to his office manager being shot, he finds himself in the middle of two sibling surprises. His still-closeted boyfriend, Jae-Min, gets a surprise visit from his sister while Cole is sprung upon by a previously unknown half-brother from Japan. The personal drama aside, he's also approached by a fortune-teller whose clients are meeting mysterious and deadly ends.

I do really enjoy where this series goes with each installment. Unlike similar series that I've read, this one manages to take the case in each book as its sort of "episode" while keeping the overall story thread of Cole and especially Cole and Jae-Min's relationship. So many times the relationship and character development is just as episodic as the rest of the plot, and there isn't as seamless of a connection from one book to the next. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book! ( )

Cole needs to find new employment. He gets bitten, stabbed, or shot at with each case he takes on. Such drama. Story is full of twist and turns. Will look for the next in this series. Always entertaining. ( )
