ok - Alex is looking after the adepts but being chased by some others who just won't give up. More introspection about his past. ( )

I don't know what it is with this series, but my mind lingers in the world long after the book is done. This one is a hard one -- Verus confronts his past and is hunted for old choices. It really hits that question of can people change? And if so, how long do you hold them accountable for their actions? Lots to think about, and the action does not stop. ( )

FĂĽr mich gibt es zwei entscheidende Fakten zu diesem Buch.
Erstens: Es ist der bisher stärkste Band der Reihe, und schon von Beginn an spannend, aufregend und ziemlich cool. Der zweite Fakt ist, dass ich immer mehr der Ansicht bin, dass man die Bücher eben nicht unabhängig voneinander lesen kann. Selbst wenn der 'Fall' an sich jedes Mal abgeschlossen ist, so bleibt es dennoch eine Reihe, die sich immer weiter fortsetzt, in der sich die Charaktere und deren Verbindungen zueinander stetig entwickeln und verändern, die Handlung durchaus auf vergangene Handlungen zugreift. Man kann hier nicht einfach mittendrin einsteigen und meinen alles zu verstehen. Das funktioniert einfach nicht. Beginnt man mittendrin fehlen einem nun mal die entscheidenden Ereignisse aus den vorangegangenen Bänden. Das ist eine Tatsache und irgendwo nimmt es der Geschichte dann auch einfach einen Teil ihrer Wirkung, finde ich. Ich hatte mit Band 5 begonnen und empfinde es so. Vor allem weil die Entwicklung unter den Charakteren einfach eine wirklich tolle Sache ist, die zu verfolgen ich wirklich nur empfehlen kann.

Also kann ich mich nur wiederholen und sagen, dass man diese Reihe unbedingt von Anfang an lesen sollte. Ich bin der Meinung, dass es sich wirklich lohnt. Die Geschichten haben ihren ganz eigenen Sog und ihre eigene Art der Spannung. Mich konnte bis jetzt jeder Band fesseln, nur dass dieser es bisher am besten geschafft hat. Vor allem bleibt der Autor seinem Stil und den Charakteren und ihrem jeweiligen Wesen und Wertvorstellungen treu.
Nun verstehe ich endlich alles in der Dynamik der Charaktere im fünften Band. Und ich finde es so schade, wie es sich entwickelt hat. ich wusste es ja nun schon, und habe so schon vorher geradezu gelitten, weil ich es nicht wollte. Gerade dieser tolle Anfang mit dem Verhalten der Figuren untereinander und wie es dann alles weiterging. Ich hoffe so sehr, dass sie wieder annährend an diesen Punkt zurück kommen können.

Das Buch war insgesamt klasse, wenn auch mit einem Ende, das bei dieser Reihe schon fast als Cliffhanger gelten kann. Eigentlich sind die Bücher immer sehr abgeschlossen, hier folgt nun zuletzt eine Szene die vergleichsweise offener gehalten ist und tatsächlich darauf setzt, dass es im nächsten Band weiter geht. Ich kann nur sagen, dass man froh sein kann, dass es den Folgeband schon gibt. Sonst wäre es tatsächlich fies gewesen, denn es wirft doch fragen auf, wenn man nicht weiß, was als nächstes kommen wird. ( )

Again, I got so into this story that it was hard to put own the book. Verus is back in the fourth installment of this series, along with the friends he has made in the previous books: Luna, Sonder, Anne, and Variam. This time Alex is being hunted for revenge for something that happened while an apprentice to the dark mage, Richard. I would share more, but really don't want to ruin the story.

Jacka has done a great job in the series with building up not only new characters in each installment, but greater character development as the the story line continues. I think it was on the first book I had said I would like to know more of Alex's past, and this book helps fill in so much more detail, even if from a slightly different point of view than expected. And the added 'hint' at the end, that there (hopefully) be at least another book to be released in the future (again - no spoilers!). Definitely the best book so far in this series!! ( )

This one had a pretty nice flavor and I think I liked it much more than the previous one. Verus is beginning to gather a good handful of friends.

But, alas, this novel brings out all the old skeletons in his closet and tests not only his ideals, but his friendships. Can a dark past truly be overlooked? Is it right to even do so?

The brother of one of his poor victims has brought together a magical assassin squad to seek revenge on all those dark mages involved in his sister's death, and most of the novel is rightly and deliciously focused on reasoning with or narrowly escaping their wrath.

This novel dealt with the hard questions and the hard solutions, and no one came out of it unscathed, including Verus.

I thought this was one of the strongest of the novels, but I do have one complaint. I'm kinda tired of Elsewhere. For a magical realm, it does very little enhance the novels. The fact that it was used again as an information-revelation device made it seem like a kind of cop-out, but that's not to say we didn't need the information. We did. Unfortunately, it kinda dragged around the otherwise well-paced novel.

The popcorn UF is getting a bit meaty, and I have nothing but good things to say about that. :) ( )
