Analyzes the political attitudes of the Jews in Alsace-Lorraine towards France and Germany following the German annexation in 1871. France represented to the Jews, apart from occasional antisemitic incidents, the ideals of the French Revolution, whereas Germany symbolized the land of hereditary Jew-hatred. Most Jewish intellectuals considered German official antisemitism more dangerous than French social antisemitism. The urban middle-class Jewish elite emigrated to France. The rural masses, less assimilated, expressed antipathy to Germany at times but accommodated to the status quo. Ch. 6 (pp. 118-136), "The Failed Alliance: Jewish-Catholic Relations", deals with persistent Catholic antisemitism which prevented a successful Catholic-Jewish coalition against the German regime. Discusses also the Dreyfus Affair, the drive for equal rights within the Reich, the struggle against antisemitism, and anti-Jewish discrimination at the University of Strasbourg, in the civil service, and in the army.
