The book itself gives the reader a snapshot biography of the following women on a per-chapter basis: Mary Patton, Bona Lombardi, Dona Maria, Joan of Arc, Epicharis "The Martyr" and Catharina "The Heroic", Lady Anne Askew, Countess of Derby, Mary Washington, Catherine Alexiewna Empress of Russia, Isabel Brown, Flora Macdonald, The Marchioness De Bonchamps, Madame Huber, Madame Roland, Lady Mary Shipley, Maria Donne, Ann Flaxman, Helen Walker, Corbett's Wife, Catherine Vassent, Countess of Cromartie, Lady Sale, Felicie De Fauveau, Hester Lane and finally Grace Darling.
With such a lengthy list not all of the subjects get equal space in the book with some of the more complex and "famous" women having longer biographies than some of the less famous women with more straight forward acts of heroism.
In terms of the book itself, being written in mid 1800s the language is rather rigid, formal and cumbersome by today's standards (and even by that of late 1800s writing) not lending itself well to relaxed recreational reading. The book does however provide a good glimpse into the lives of lesser known historical figures and events. ( )
