I don't want to give away too much about the book but my kids loved the two worlds and really enjoyed the characters and action. We will probably read this book again.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I received this book from LibraryThing .Clifton Chase , a boy in the seventh grade is involved through an arrow which belongs to his family into a series of aventures of the Medieval England . I think this book is appropiate for young people as in an enjoyable reading meddles the magic world with the history of England, comparing two worlds : the present and the past. Clifton Chase is in the seventh grade, he has archery class (lucky kid); when he makes a poor bet with the new kid and triggers an adventure. This book was a great adventure, Jaime M Engle did a superb job on the lessons, mixing them in with history and magic. For parents looking into this book, I'd recommend it. Be prepared you may need to brush up on King Richard, medieval England, magic, and Florida to satisfy questions from the kids. The only short coming I found is that it was hard to get into at the beginning, after a bit the story really took off. Maybe I'll start the authors next book with a cup of dropwater. Clifton Chase is a middle grades adventure novel that combines historical fiction and fantasy with a religious twist. My favorite parts were the historical elements, from the descriptions of Medieval England to the political intrigue of the War of the Roses. Engle weaves the history into the story in a way that teaches without dumping facts on the reader, with just enough fantasy to keep things interesting. The pacing in the beginning was a little slow for me, and I would have liked a more concrete connection between the modern-day elements and the fantasy world, but this is still a solid middle grades read.Read this review and others on my blog at: http://unavoidableawkwardness.blogspot.com/2013/08/book-review-clifton-chase-and... I appreciated the light touch in this book of using real history without bashing us over the head with Serious History Talk, it's a very good blend of fiction and fact. I wish the beginning was tighter, less inside-his-head and more showing, not telling. It took me a couple tries to really get into reading it. Though it could just be me! As progressed in the new world I thought he handled strange incidences just a wee bit too casually - no questioning, just accepted everything at face value and went along. Again, maybe it's just me, but comparing his reactions to, say, the children in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe ... I think I'd have liked to have seen more reaction, more wondering, from Clifton. Perhaps more resistance. Some parts dragged and felt like we were going in circles, others just dashed right through something I wanted to know more about. I feel like this is a good book and the author's next one will be GREAT. All in all, though, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to others. And I'd read the next book this author writes! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
