ALICIA has a fiery temper and astounding beauty. Too bad she's been murdered. Too bad her husband, Professor Carlos Mann, has gone OCD to hide from the fact. Still, when one of Carlos's students is sold into slavery by a mob that traffics in Asian girls, Alicia returns with a vengeance. Alicia's Ghost is an imaginative and thrilling ride through the human and spirit worlds of Mexico and America. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

I’m not the type of person who is typically able and willing to suspend disbelief when it comes to stories with ghosts. Indeed, there were a number of moments while reading this book when I felt the intrusion of my own lack of belief imposing itself upon the story. I sometimes found it difficult not to question the reasonableness of the logic that exists in Alicia’s and Carlos’ world. But I got past it, and here’s why.
It’s a well-written story. The characters are complex and well-fleshed out, the plot is unique and compelling, and the quality of writing is excellent. But what I enjoyed most about it were the subtle changes in tone as the story progresses. The first chapter – which is beautifully written – leads one to believe that the story will be dark, perhaps even depressing, but it isn’t. In fact, once the Alicia character is introduced and her POV begins, the tale begins to take on a lighter, sometimes even humorous tone, and this was what made the story for me. However horrible their experiences get, the characters never seem to lose hope or their senses of humor, and I found that very refreshing. The authors have made it very easy to become invested in Alicia and Carlos and all of their friends, both living and dead. Most importantly, when I got to the end of the book, I realized that I was disappointed because it was over. I really wanted to know what happened to them next. Good thing Iuppa and Mendoza have written a sequel!
