I never know if I like the way John Updike writes, with the details of a rhododendron bush as complete as the death of the baby Rebecca... Spare and distant, always you feel like an observer and never as part of the story, there is no deep involvement with the characters... and yet they are there as characters where before I read the novel they were not...
For Rabbit, Redux
I am less sure about this one - it felt very dated and American in a way I couldn't relate to, what with the Vietnam War playing as a backdrop... I was kind of frustrated at Harry's constant "let it ride" attitude, but that I guess has more to do with personal experience of men who won't shit or get off the pot... (
