Una aventura de Asterix

Una delle ultime avventure firmate da Goscinny si rivela essere una delle più brillanti e variate fra quelle ambientate in Armorica. Dopo un breve prologo tra Roma e il Midi, arriva infatti al villaggio un oste che ha comprato da un congedato il regalo fatto da Cesare a quest’ultimo, ovvero il villaggio stesso.
La vicenda si diverte a punzecchiare le piccole comunità di provincia – il rifiuto di ciò che non si conosce che irrompe dall’esterno – oltre che a mettere in risalto la rivalità fra le due mogli come motore della sfida del nuovo arrivato al posto di Abraracourcix. In più Asterix si impegna in un duello al gladio che cita Cyrano e Zorro assieme mentre la chiassosità risulta più contenuta del solito, tanto è vero che i cazzottoni arrivano solo alla fine.
Ho trovato l’insieme assai più divertente ora che da piccolo, quando non l’avevo mai troppo apprezzata. ( )

Rom og Gallien, år 50 før Kristus
Den garvede legionær, Spiritus Gravis, har fejret slutningen på 20-års tjeneste lidt vel fugtigt. Hans værdige afsked, Honesta Missio, ender i kachotten og Julius Cæsar spiller ham et puds ved at forære ham "en lille gallerby omgivet af fjerne romerske udposter" som jordlod.
Spiritus Gravis bytter jordlodden for vin og mad i en kro. Kroværten Orthopædix dukker op i byen med konen Angina og datteren Bacfix.
Han bliver grint ud, men Majestix synes at Angina er for grov ved ham og forbarmer sig. Orthopædix får en kro ved siden af Hørmetix og holder åbent hus. Godemine og Angina har samme slags kjole på og der er med det samme iskold luft. Det ender i slagsmål, og Angina beslutter sig for at blive og for at så splid i hele byen. Hun får Orthopædix til at stille op som høvdingekandidat og det giver Majestix noget af en overraskelse, for folk flest er helt ligeglade med hvem der er høvding, bare der er vildsvin og romere nok.
Angina fedter for fiskehandleren, hun får Bacfix til at indynde sig ved Obelix, og snart er byen splittet.
Spiritus Gravis dukker op i byen, netop da forvirringen er størst. Han kommer i sværdkamp med Asterix, der ridser et Z på maven af ham.
Gravis henvender sig ved udposten Terrarium og møder sin gamle ven, Crocus Aureus, der nu er blevet option, fordi han har skrevet sig for 20 år mere. Centurion Milusius bliver ikke glad, men er tvunget til at gøre noget ved sagen. Først degraderer han dog Crocus til rekrut igen.
Milusius bombarderer gallerbyen med katapulter. Det får Majestix og Orthopædix til at komme til fornuft og romerne bliver nedkæmpet.
Godemine og Angina bliver også forsonet og Godemine får adressen i Paris på Dithyrambix, Anginas bror.
Trubadurix er med ved festbordet og snakker med Zaza, som Bacfix hedder blandt venner.

The 21st of the Asterix chronicles, the story follows an innkeeper, Orthapedix and his wife and daughter, as they travel to the little Gaulish village we all know and love to claim ownership...how this happens is after the inn-keeper takes the village as payment for a bottle of wine and a meal from a drunken Roman soldier who has had it gifted to him by Caesar for his 20 years loyal service.

This obviously does not sit well with the chief and what is loosely based on democracy the two battle it out to become chief of the village, only to have the Roman soldier come back to claim what is his. When refused he visits the nearest camp and they agree to invade for the pride of the Empire (somewhat hesitatingly) when they suspect there is no magic potion. Of course all hell breaks loose and normal transmission resumes.

This is not a bad book and has some great little snippets with the new 'villagers' and parodies the skullduggery and backhanders of modern political battles.

As usual there are some great takes on names including;

Legionnaire Egganlettus who resigns with the army after finding farming lettuces dull
Centurion Tonsilittus, commander of the fortified camp of Laudanum
Angina, wife of the inn-keeper
Influenza (also referred to as Zaza), the innkeeper's daughter
And though I had forgotten it, Bacteria, wife of Unhygenix the fish monger.
Interesting facts from this story include the reference to Zsa Zsa Gabor and in a sword fight between Asterix and the drunk Legionnaire (Tremensdelerius) he carves a "Z" into his shirt which she takes as a sign of his love for her which isn't clear in the story, however makes reference to the TV series "Zorro" which was playing in Europe at the time of publication. The sword fight also pays reference to Hamlet with prose from the play, although in the French publication is quotes Cyrano de Bergerac. While Asterix always has his sword with him, this is one of only a few scenes he actually uses it.

Cacofonix the Bard is not tied up at the end of this episode, and in fact can be seen chatting to Influenza at the banquet, possibly as they both have an interest in all things from the city (in this book, referring to the city of Lutetia). ( )

À Rome, le légionnaire Roméomontaigus, un ivrogne, fête sa libération de l’armée après vingt ans de carrière. Comme il a insulté Jules César, celui-ci le punit en lui offrant comme cadeau le fameux village des irréductibles Gaulois. Irrécupérable, il échange ce cadeau contre quelques coupes de vin avec Orthopédix le restaurateur gaulois. Celui-ci et sa famille vont prendre possession de leur biens... ( )
