Eddie Grant was a major league baseball player in the early twentieth century. He also was a war hero. After the Great War began in Europe, "Harvard Eddie" as he was known, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, trained at Camp Plattsburgh to be an infantry officer. He and other well-educated young men were influenced by the American Preparedness Movement and its exuberant proponent Theodore Roosevelt. Although Grant was too old to be drafted, he was not too old to fight and to die for his country. When his Harvard Law School buddy, Major Charles Whittlesey, and soldiers of the soon-to-be-named the "Lost Battalion" had advanced too far, they were trapped by German forces. Sick at the time, and likely suffering from the Spanish Flu, Captain Grant did not hesitate. He died in battle attempting to rescue Whittlesey and his men. The New York Giants honored Grant with a plaque on the field in the Polo Grounds. After the Giants played their last game in New York before moving to San Francisco, fans tore up the field. The plaque disappeared. To this day the mystery of the lost plaque remains unsolved.This volume placing Grant in a historical context, also focuses on baseball and the U.S. military, two major institutions that were racially segregated.… (meer)
