This graphic novel is an extremely fun adaptation of the JRR Tolkien classic! It brings to life all the characters we're already so familiar with: Bilbo and Gandalf, the magical elves and dwarves. The plot in this graphic novel is exactly to the novel, and the graphics align to the story well! In times of fun and whimsy, Wenzel uses bright, vibrant colors. Amongst Gollum and goblins, though, the tones become muted greys and browns, along with almost sickly greens. The pictures do a lovely job complementing the story throughout. Please, no thrown stones for this, but: I was never a huge JRR Tolkien fan. While his language is very beautiful, it can also be a little excessive, with a single tree being described in a whole page. For that reason, although this graphic novel is relatively short and contains far less text, II think it was more appealing and accessible to me because of that; I was able to focus on more of the storyline, itself, and to enjoy the fun of Tolkien's world! I still maintain that the Hobbit has far too many dwarfs and far too little character development for me to truely like it, but I find the graphic novel adaptation is much more appealing than the original novel. It's still got a lot of Tolkien's characteristic narration (far more than is normal for most graphic novels, which rely more heavily on dialogue), but the quickened pacing and wonderfully traditional fantasy artwork does a lot to keep the book engaging.
In the Hobbit we get as close I think as possible to the roots of the Fantasy genre without going back to the original myths, and epic poems, and legends themselves. What were stock charachters and plots are new and fresh ideas. Onderdeel van de reeks(en)
