Wordsmiths and Warriors explores the heritage of English through the places in Britain that shaped it. It unites the warriors, whose invasions transformed the language, with the poets, scholars, reformers, and others who helped create its character. The book relates a real journey. David and Hilary Crystal drove thousands of miles to produce this fascinating combination of English-language history and travelogue, from locations in south-east Kent to the Scottish lowlands, and from south-west Wales to the East Anglian coast. David provides thedescriptions and linguistic associations, Hilary the full-colour photographs. They include a guide for anyone wanting to follow in their footsteps but arrange the book to reflect the chronology of the language. This starts with the Anglo-Saxon arrivals in Kent and in the places that show theearliest evidence of English. It ends in London with the latest apps for grammar. In between are intimate encounters with the places associated with such writers as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Wordsworth; the biblical Wycliffe and Tyndale; the dictionary compilers Cawdrey, Johnson, and Murray; dialectwriters, elocutionists, and grammarians, and a host of other personalities.Among the book's many joys are the diverse places that allow warriors such as Byrhtnoth and King Alfred to share pages with wordsmiths like Robert Burns and Tim Bobbin, and the unexpected discoveries that enliven every stage of the authors' epic journey. There are three facets that make up this journey; not only do David and Hilary Crystal take us way back to the very origins of English, but we get to meet the key people that have the shaped the words, sounds and spelling and they take us across the UK to the places where these pivotal moments linguistic development happened. In their journey they visited places all around the country, they travelled from the south in Kent to north of the border in Scotland, and all manner of places in between. And not only are the locations diverse, so are the characters that have shaped our language. There are a few writers and poets in their list, as you would hope, but here you will find kings and monks, warriors and coders; who through single minded tenacity have given us dictionaries and shorthand, thesauruses and dialects. There are ancient runes scratched onto stone monuments, the first standard English word and sentence. printing, the magnificent art that is the Lindesfarne gospels, a scattering of blue plaques, and spelling and grammar for the pedants.
Written over the course of 2012, the Crystals travelled all over the UK to bring us this. David’s boundless energy for our language is evident throughout the book, and it is stuffed full of facts and details. Hilary took numerous photos of the places that they visited, and they have provided lots of information and details of the places should you wish to replicate their journey and see the places that crafted our language. Well worth reading for anyone who has an interest in language, it is a book that can be dipped into again and again. ( )
