Fiction. Literature. HTML:

The friendship between Mary and Nix had endured since childhood, a seemingly unbreakable bond, until the mid-1980s, when the two young women embarked on a summer vacation in Greece. It was a trip initiated by Nix, who had just learned that Mary had been diagnosed with a disease that would cut her life short and who was determined that it be the vacation of a lifetime. But by the time their visit to Greece was over, Nix had withdrawn from their friendship, and Mary had no idea why.
Three years later, Nix is dead, and Mary returns to Europe to try to understand what went wrong. In the process she meets the first of many men that she will spend time with as she travels throughout the world. Through them she experiences not only a sexual awakening but a spiritual and emotional awakening that allows her to understand how the past and the future are connected and to appreciate the freedom to live life adventurously.

This book could benefit from a little better editing and structure throughout the plot and character development. The story was a bit blase, but it wasn't terrible. ( )

It took me a while to devour this book. I had a difficult time with the writing style, but there was something keeping me from avoiding it altogether. I kept coming back for more! I am happy that I persevered. I read the whole book and I was happy that I did. It was truly a learning experience both in learning a new style of writing and also understanding and learning about choices that people make that may be different that oneself. ( )

I really liked the author's writing style, but I just wasn't drawn into this story. Mary and Nix are best friends. Mary has health issues that will result in a shortened life expectancy. But ultimately we learn Nix is the one who dies young... and first. I found Mary very hard to relate to and unsympathetic. But then, I am not faced with a life-threatening illness. Perhaps that is the reason she makes what seem to be selfish life decisions without regard to how they will affect her family and loved ones. She travels the globe seeking men in her life... some are important, others not so much. The writing was very good and I do look forward to more from this author! ( )

This is a very enjoyable read. Perfect for summer days on the beach. A Life in Men is a coming of age story with a couple of twists. The main character is battling a serious chronic disease as well as dealing with the loss of her best friend. The story contains plenty of drama and love stories to keep you engaged until the end. ( )

Pretend I'm not already dead. That isn't important anyway. It's just that, from here, I can see everything.
