Ellerbee's anecdotal stories of when she worked at NBC news in the 80s. Much of the book is very funny and it's definitely entertaining, but it also shows the beginning of the end of *real* news programs. ( ) Television journalist Linda Ellerbee shares her time in the news biz beginning as a local reporter in Houston and New York, a congressional and campaign correspondent with NBC to co-anchor of Weekend and NBC News Overnight. Ellerbee was at her best in the anchor's chair "and so it goes" with this book.
In general, she feels that to call TV, as Paddy Chayevsky did, ""democracy at its ugliest"" is to underestimate the viewer. She dubs TV ""paternalism at its slickest,"" and throughout her career refuses to talk down to the audience, that unknown quantity referred to around the offices as ""the plumber from Albuquerque."" (Something like The New Yorker's Little Old Lady from Dubuque?) Her colloquial style serves these stories well, and the hip wit that made her ideal for ""Not-ready-for-prime-time News"" is amply in evidence. Ellerbee's career has shown that TV news can be fun without being vapid; these behind-the-scenes anecdotes show that what didn't make it on the air was even funnier. Onderscheidingen
A veteran of NBC, CBS, and ABC, Linda Ellerbee now runs Lucky Duck Productions, which produces a wide variety of programs all across the television spectrum but is best known for its highly praised, multi-award-winning Nick News series and topical children's specials for Nickelodeon.
