This book, done while Cooper was still a young scholar (first printing is 1965), is so fine a selection of passages from 16-17c reports on Japan that when I gathered material for “Topsy-turvy 1585,” I found to my dismay that I was scooped time and time again. It was one reason I put in more of old Europe than I had planned: Cooper had not done it! And, Cooper’s notes are as perfect as his selection. The only problem I found in this book is a mistranslation from the Spanish of Valignano in the first passage of the Daily Life and Customs chapter, “Unlike Any Other People.” Because the statement is crucial to understanding Valignano’s understanding of cultural relativity (or his explanation of it, or apologia, to justify his revolutionary policy of Accomodation), I give it lengthy treatment on page 16 of my book. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
