Not a bad story. I did enjoy it more than the Raffles tales but that's just me. ( )

A boring, forgettable book with an uninteresting plot. I was attracted to the title on manybooks.net (part of Project Gutenberg) and downloaded the book. I kept reading till the end just to see how things would turn out, more out of a personal dedication to finishing any book I've started than on any merit on the book's side. And when I reached the end, I regretted the time wasted on that poor book.

Add mediocre storytelling to an already weak storyline, and that's all you get. A waste. ( )

Things seem strange aboard the Lady Jermyn. The first mate is convinced that the ship is off course and there's gossip among the passengers that a secret cargo has been smuggled on board. In the middle of the night, the ship catches fire and sinks, with George Cole the only survivor and back in London, he's convinced he's being followed.

A fairly typical Victorian mystery novel, although I note that the language isn't as overworked as other novels written during this time. Some of the twists aren't particularly surprising, but I found the book an entertaining read in any case. ( )
