This book is a beautifully written poem that describes all of the things that water can be. The illustrations are really pretty and the text is very simple, so i think students would be able to use the images to make a lot of meaning from what they're seeing in the pictures. Also I think this would be a good book to talk about inference because some of the language that's used in the book requires a bit of inferring in order to understand what the illustrator is depicting. I think I would use this book as a quick read a loud to get students minds going about the nature of water. I think this would also be a good book to use for a provocation in k-1 especially as a way to get students to carry out investigations to figure out the properties of water. This book also provides basic scientific information about the properties of water, which is really useful. ( )

This picture book is an adorable view at all the things water can be. There are many reasons that made me enjoy this picture book. First, I love that it is realistic in the sense that water isn’t always all good things. Most pages will talk about how water can be a “thirst quencher / kid drencher / home maker” and some pages say how water can be a “ship wrecker.” Secondly, the illustrations are vivid and colorful, appealing to the eye. The illustrator adds texture and mixtures of warm and cool colors that make each page different. Lastly, the book groups its descriptions of water according to the season. For example, the first pages are about what water can be in the summer. Later in the story, it is about what water can be in the autumn, winter, and spring. This is just a nice subtle way to organize the book, rather than random descriptions of water. This picture book is ideal for a younger elementary group of students.

I stumbled across this book while I was browsing through the children’s section in the library. The front cover’s vibrant blues, illustrations of the playful frogs and wispy font initially drew me to it. As I opened the book, I was surprised to find that the book had very little text and was actually written in verse. The book talked about the many different forms water could take and what it could do. For example, Salas showcases water as an “otter feeder”, “downhill speeder”, “kid drencher”, “thirst quencher”, and “drink cooler” just to name a few.of the different things water can do. One of the major features of the text that I really enjoyed was the fact that Salas talked about the various forms water can take throughout the year as she featured kids running around in the sprinklers and showcased the frost on the child’s bedroom windowsill during winter. The rest of the book was also really captivating with bright and colorful illustrations on the pages. The pictures were inviting and warm with colors and shapes in blues, yellows, oranges, etc. I also really loved how the book was written like a poem, it was both informative and easy to read and follow. This is a book about water and all the beautiful thing it can be. Laura Purdie Salas uses poetry to span through the seasons and explain to children how important water is as well as how dangerous it can be. Violeta Dabija is a wonderful illustrator, the pictures really come alive with color. Even though the book is big in illustrations, the story is short so as to keep an audience interested. ( )
