"The next pulse-pounding thriller in John Connolly's internationally bestselling Charlie Parker series. The community of Prosperous, Maine has always thrived when others have suffered. Its inhabitants are wealthy, its children's future secure. It shuns outsiders. It guards its own. And at the heart of Prosperous lie the ruins of an ancient church, transported stone by stone from England centuries earlier by the founders of the town... But the death of a homeless man and the disappearance of his daughter draw the haunted, lethal private investigator Charlie Parker to Prosperous. Parker is a dangerous man, driven by compassion, by rage, and by the desire for vengeance. In him the town and its protectors sense a threat graver than any they have faced in their long history, and in the comfortable, sheltered inhabitants of a small Maine town, Parker will encounter his most vicious opponents yet. Charlie Parker has been marked to die so that Prosperous may survive. Prosperous, and the secret that it hides beneath its ruins."--… (meer)

The community of Prosperous, Maine, moved from England, bringing their church with them. It's a church with a lot of Green Men and it doesn't feel like a comfortable or welcoming church. The town is literally prosperous but at what cost.
Charlie Parker hears of the death of a homeless man he knew, and the disappearance of his daughter and he feels compelled to investigate but the investigation will bring him up against people willing to kill to keep their secrets.
I could see where a lot of this was going, I have an interest in Green Man imagery for a long time, and the town's prosperity is an old trope, but it was well done and kept me reading. I'm curious to know where things will go from here. ( )

Another excellent book in the Charlie Parker series, an obscure religion the controls a town, and a turning point for Charlie Parker. ( )

Charlie Parker investigates the death of tramp with a missing daughter. And the search takes him to the city Prosperous, a peaceful and affluent little town in Main with an old stone church. But the town has a dark secret and there are people in the city that will do anything to protect the secret.

The story in the book slowly builds up, you get to know the new characters involved and you follow Charlie as he tries to get to the bottom of the case with the dead tramp and his missing daughter. It’s never boring, John Connolly carefully draws you into the story and everything builds up to a violent finale. I was a bit troubled that there was so little Angel and Louis in the first half of the book, but I needed not worry, they returned to the story with a vengeance. The only complaint I have about the story is that I wanted a bigger confrontation in the end. It was over a bit too soon, and that was a bit of a letdown.

The hardest part for me reading this book was putting it down but at the same time I almost didn’t want to finish it since I knew that after I finish the book I will have a long wait for the next book. Gone are the days when I had several Charlie Parker books to read through. Although I’m a bit tempted to re-read the books, especially the first ones that I read. ( )

This book was awesome and in my opinion, the BEST entry in the series so far. If you love Charlie Parker, you need to read this. If you're not reading the Charlie Parker series, you should be! ( )
