Centering around Elizabeth Cady Stanton's struggles for women's rights, this story is told through the eyes of young Cordelia. The elderly Mrs. Stanton gives Cordelia riding lessons on her old mule. On one election day, Mrs. Stanton tells Cordelia the heart-wrenching story of her fight for equality. When the wagon comes by to take voters to the polls, Mrs. Stanton tries once more to cast her ballot over the taunts and jeers of the crowd of men. But it is Cordelia whose dramatic and fearless action leaves the men -- including her own brother -- with no doubt as to who will win the ballot box battle in the end. This is a great biographical story of Elizabeth Stanton. The plot not only shows her as an adult fighting for her rights but also as a young girl trying to live up the standards of her deceased brother. At the end is also a long description of Mrs. Stanton's life and what she accomplished. The character of Elizabeth Staton has a great personality that charms the readers. She ignors many of the young girls questions to answer her own and her dialogues with other characters is humerous. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Illustrated in full color. Just in time for the presidential election comes Caldecott medalist Emily Arnold McCully's stirring tale of a young girl's act of bravery inspired by the great Elizabeth Cady Stanton. It is the fall of 1880, and Cordelia is more interested in horse riding than in hearing her neighbor, Mrs. Stanton talk about her fight for women's suffrage. But on Election Day, Mrs. Stanton tells the heart-wrenching story of her childhood. Charged with the story's message, Cordelia determines to go with Mrs. Stanton to the polls in an attempt to vote--above the jeers and taunts of the male crowd. With faces, landscapes, and action scenes brought to life by McCully's virtuosic illustrations, Cordelia's turning-point experience is sure to inspire today's young girls (and boys) everywhere.
