This book started off by introducing all different kinds of birds, each page had some feathers on it. Then we were introduced to the cat named Flume. Flume collected feathers because they liked overstuffed pillows.

Summary: A picture book for very young kids. Each page is a picture of a bird, and a detailed illustration of one or more feathers that are characteristic of that bird (also a clever sub-narrative of a curious black cat)

Personal reaction: The bird illustrations are stylized and icon-like. Nice, though a tad generic perhaps. The feather illustrations are more realistic, though not photo realistic. They are gorgeous. It would be nice if we got more specific names for the birds (e.g., "Barred Owl" rather than just "Owl"). Kids will love this. So many details to point out and enjoy. ( )

A picture book about birds that tells the story of Plume the cat with very little words but a lot of great visual dynamics

This is a wonderful book that introduces birds from exotic birds like a peacock to chickens. We see each bird, labelled, and a grouping of their feathers to show that all the feathers are not the same. As well the reader can play "Where's the cat" on each page. You do not see the full cat, perhaps just an ear or the tail. The cat is not trying to hunt the birds, but it seems they are observing along with the reader. At the end, we find out that the cat just wanted feathers to make a comfy pillow. The illustrations are wonderful. This is a great way to introduce bird watching, talk about types of feathers and their purposes, as well as where birds live, what they eat etc. I really liked this book and so did my grandson. When we went outside he started looking for birds and asking what is that one called. A wonderful book for a home, public or school library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley. ( )

Plume is a visual delight! Each page features a different bird with their feather enlarged on one page and the bird on the opposite. As you are reading the book you begin to notice a black paw here, a black tail there, a set of green eyes peeking out from behind a bird. Hmmm, is this cat stalking the birds? The last few pages explain what this cat is doing. ( )
