In "God Wins," Mark Galli shows how basing our ideas about God, heaven, and hell on our subjective spiritual experiences is a dead-end. Tragically, too many Christians--including evangelicals--tend to measure their spirituality by their experiences. Our culture encourages us to look for experiences of the divine everywhere--in ordinary daily life as well as in places of worship. In some ways, it's not bad to be on the lookout for God's touch. But, the beauty of Christianity is found in the opposite impulse: we don't have to rely on vicissitudes of our subjective experience, but instead we're encouraged by Scripture to place our faith in the reality of what Christ did for us on the cross. God has won on the cross, and God's victory will eventually become evident to all. That's the central message of Scripture--a reality that informs what we experience, not the other way around.
