Hallie Costa hat schon sehr früh ihre Mutter verloren. Aber bei ihrem Vater hat sie Geborgenheit. Er ist nicht nur zu Hallie liebevoll, auch um die Bewohner der kleinen Stadt kümmert er sich als Arzt sehr intensiv.
Die Mutter von Gus Silva wird ermordet und Gus ist traumatisiert. Hallie bringt ihn mit viel Mitgefühl und Geduld wieder zurück ins Leben. Bald sieht man Hallie, Gus und seinen Freund Neill nur noch zusammen. Später ist es die große Liebe zwischen Gus und Hallie und alle denken, dass die beiden für immer zusammenbleiben. Doch dann passiert etwas, das die drei dazu bringt, ihren eigenen Weg zu suchen. Gus wird Priester und Neill berühmt als Schauspieler und für seine Eskapaden. Hallie tut sich schwerer, aber dann folgt sie ihrem Vater als Ärztin und verliebt sich. Doch dann braucht Gus Hallies Hilfe.
Die Geschichte wird aus wechselnden Perspektiven erzählt, so dass man Gedanken und Handlungen gut nachvollziehen kann. Es gibt eine ganze Reihe Charaktere, die gut und authentisch beschrieben wurde. Hallie ist sehr mitfühlend und warmherzig. Wenn ich sein Handeln auch nicht immer verstehen kann, ist mir Gus auch sehr sympathisch. Ganz besonders hat mir Hallies Vater gefallen, ein wirklich toller Mensch, der sich um andere Kümmert.
Es ist nicht ganz einfach, etwas zu dem Buch zu sagen ohne zu viel zu verraten. Immer wieder gibt es Wendungen, die überraschen und die Geschichte interessant machen. Dennoch gab es auch Längen in diesem Buch und es hätte der Geschichte bestimmt nicht geschadet, wenn hin und wieder etwas straffer erzählt worden wäre.
Bei diesem schönen Roman über Freundschaft, Liebe und Verrat kann man mitfiebern und mitfühlen. ( )

I really enjoyed the characters, and the setting, as it was a place I know from childhood. It was an easy read and a page turner. To me, it read like a mystery/thriller, a genre I just don't love. After a point in the book, I had that sense of being drawn too heavily towards what happens in the end. It also seemed, in ways, like a book written for a young audience. ( )

I absolutely loved this book! The writing was so beautiful that I felt like I was in the real Provincetown. The descriptions of people, smells, sights, dunes, ocean made them surround me. I also fell in love with the characters: the main ones like Hallie, Gus, and Mila, but also the steady and/or eccentric secondary characters. I loved when they did, hurt when they suffered, encouraged when they persevered. ( )

I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of The Orphans of Race Point before it came out, and have been raving about it to anyone who will listen ever since, and bought two copies -- one to keep and one to give as a gift. If you liked The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and are looking for another sprawling, Dickensian novel to read next…this is it.

Instead of in London, Las Vegas, or New York City, as in The Goldfinch, the tangled lives of two motherless children Gus and Hallie, and their friend Neil, unfold mostly on the beaches and narrow streets of Provincetown, Mass. – on the outermost tip of Cape Cod – and in the seacoast city of New Bedford, Massachusetts, where there is also a large Portuguese-American community. Tragedies, misunderstandings, and missed opportunities pile up for the three young friends, after a violent act by Gus’ father brings them together, setting them on their course for life. Fate lies heavily on the characters, as the book explores true love, fatherhood, human behavior, the human spirit, and what about ourselves can be changed.

It would make a great book club choice, and has a reading group guide included.
