The sensational true story of Eddie Rickenbacker, America's greatest flying ace
At the turn of the twentieth century two new technologiesâ??the car and airplaneâ??took the nation's imagination by storm as they burst, like comets, into American life. The brave souls that leaped into these dangerous contraptions and pushed them to unexplored extremes became new American heroes: the race car driver and the flying ace.
No individual did more to create and intensify these raw new roles than the tall, gangly Eddie Rickenbacker, who defied death over and over with such courage and pluck that a generation of Americans came to know his face better than the president's. The son of poor, German-speaking Swiss immigrants in Columbus, Ohio, Rickenbacker overcame the specter of his father's violent death, a debilitating handicap, and, later, accusations of being a German spy, to become the American military ace of aces in World War I and a Medal of Honor recipient. He and his high-spirited, all-too-short-lived pilot comrades, created a new kind of aviation warfare, as they pushed their machines to the edge of destructionâ??and often over itâ??without parachutes, radios, or radar.
Enduring Courage is the electrifying story of the beginning of America's love affair with speedâ??and how one man above all the rest showed a nation the way forward. No simple daredevil, he was an innovator on the racetrack, a skilled aerial dualist and squadron commander, and founder of Eastern Air Lines. Decades after his heroics against the Red Baron's Flying Circus, he again showed a war-weary nation what it took to survive against nearly insurmountable odds when he and seven others endured a harrowing three-week ordeal adrift without food or water in the Pacific during World War II.
For the first time, Enduring Courage peels back the layers of hero to reveal the man himself. With impeccable research and a gripping narrative, John F. Ross tells the unforgettable story of a man who pushed the limits of speed, endurance and courage and emerged as an Americ

Some people have courage during a crisis, others have enduring courage throughout their lives. Eddie Rickenbacker had unbelievable courage and seemed destined for greatness. He faced tremendous risks as a racecar driver and then as an ace pilot during WWI. He was fortunate to be at the forefront of both these emerging technologies, developing new techniques and discovering and testing their limits. In relating the life of an American icon, top driver and America's ace of aces in WWI, the author also gives us a double bonus of early automotive and aviation history! Eddie was at the forefront of both technologies and stretched the boundaries of each. It was a heady time and Rickenbacker was born at exactly the right time! It is really hard to believe what he did and the fact he survived and thrived, and, ironically, was only in an airplane crash after all his exploits in the war. This book is truly mind blowing when you realize what it was like and how quickly the new technologies developed. There really is nothing comparable until the space age.

The interesting and informative story of Eddie Rickenbacker and the early days of racing and flight. The first section, from Eddie's early fascination with cars through his days as a race car driver are the highlight of the book. I knew very little about the man or about the early days of racing but the author's careful research and clear writing makes it an easy and compelling read. The early part of Eddie's training as a pilot is equally well done. I found the the later part of Eddie's World War 1 days and his life afterward a more difficult read. The section dealing with Eddie's as a pilot during WW1 are densely packed with names, dates and historical information. The author does his best but it was difficult to keep track of so many people who are introduced, given a few lines or paragraphs and then rarely or never mentioned again but it will be an easier read for those who are better versed in WW1 or aviation history. The final section of the book covers Eddie's later life and provides a suitable conclusion. Overall, this is a worthy read for anyone interested in learning about a Eddie Rickenbacker, early racing or World War 1 era aviation. Note: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher ( )

I had never heard of Eddie Rickenbacker, WWI Ace, before, but his life was very interesting. I actually found his years of racing before any safety standards come out to be the most exciting. This is simply a wonderful biography. ( )

This is a well researched book about the life and times of Eddie Rickenbacker America's greatest "ace" pilot during World War 1. I liked the early portion of the book best as he develops the smarts and drive to make him the greatest American hero of that era. This part of the book is about his growing up in Columbus, Ohio and his quest to become one of the greatest auto racers during the very dangerous infancy of that sport. All during his life he is seen as a "commoner" and has to struggle for acceptance as he lacks many of the advantages and social graces of others. So, his is a life of proving himself over and over again. This book is a must for auto racing and aviation history buffs. ( )

“Enduring Courage: Ace Pilot Eddie Rickenbacker and the Dawn of the Age of Speed” is a richly-detailed look at the life and career of aviator ace Eddie Rickenbacker. Exciting scenes of Indianapolis race cars and World War I dogfights propel the reader into the midst of Rickenbacker’s world and provides insight into the man, his strength, and his courage.

More than a simple “biography,” Ross’s work brings to life the mood of the people and the time in which Rickenbacker lived and provides the reader with unforgettable insights into the life of one of America’s greatest aviation legends.

A highly recommended book about a true American hero. ( )
