Fiction. Literature. HTML:

“A very funny, very moving novel about being lost and then found . . . I love this book.”
—Antonya Nelson, author of Bound

Two strangers meet over the hood of a used car in Texas: Marcus, who is fleeing both his financial and personal failures, and Maria, who after years of dodging her mistakes has returned to her hometown to make amends. One looking forward, the other looking back, they face off over the car they both want. And after knowing each other for less than an hour, they decide to buy it together. All I Have in This World is a different kind of love story about the power of friendship.
“A Springsteenian ode to the promise and heartbreak of the highway.” —The New York Times
“Parker’s skillfully rendered story rolls like a restless, unpredictable west Texas river—calm depths here, turbulent shallows there—as Marcus and Maria communicate and lurch toward an imperfect union . . . Which feels a lot like real life.” —The Denver Post
“Both poetic and starkly real . . . All I Have in This World charts the emotional and geographic journey of two people trying valiantly to move forward.” —The Raleigh News and Observer
“A sweet, sinuous, and smart love story.” —Washingtonian magazine

Received this book from LT early review. All I have in This World by Michael Parker is an interesting premise about two strangers who agree to co-own a car. The story creates depth by telling the story of the cars previous owners. A bit clunky in places with the writing, but not bad. ( )

Won this book from LibraryThing in exchange for a review.

This is a nice little gem of a book. The interaction of the characters, including a Buick Electra, is fascinating. The 2 main characters meet at a car lot and go in on the car together, trading days of use. There are also glimpses of previous owners with small insights in to their lives.
What I enjoyed most was the authors ability to describe how our thoughts jump around. A character will witness or recall an event which sends thoughts to other memories, people or actions that lead to other memories or observations about things perhaps even tangentially connected to current events. This struck a chord with me.

At first I was unsure I would like this story, and the writing is maybe different that what I might be used to, but as it went on I got into the flow of it and is quite good. I have found, as I get older, that these types of character studies appeal to me more than genre stuff I read when younger. Peoples motivations and decisions and their consequences are fascinating.
I recommend this book. ( )

I found All I Have in This World, by Michael Parker to be little difficult to get into at first ,but as the book progressed I found myself more engaged in the characters and the story. The story is connected by a car – a 1984 Buick Electra – and in intermittent chapters between the main story of Maria and Marcus (both somewhat damaged people) the story of the car is detailed from the day it rolled off the assembly line and all its owners – right up to the day Maria and Marcus meet on the lot and decide to purchase it together and what happens to them all in the end.
The book is a study in forgiveness, both from others and of oneself, redemption, love and hate, family and friends a above all else, in starting over. ( )

The premise of the book is an interesting one but the story was a bit bumpy. ( )

I was intrigued by this story about a car which adds other characters to it's story. I like the fact that this book took the history of this particular car from it's beginning. I wasn't fond of the fact that sometimes the story dragged on and I found myself getting bored. I was interested in reading about the two characters meeting at the car lot and then purchasing the car together. These two characters, Maria and Marcus bring their own stories into the story about the Buick Electra. Certainly a different type of story. I am always drawn to the quirky fiction. I just found myself getting bored at times with this one even though I was interested in reading until the end. ( )
