This book was very enjoyable to read because it was well written and the pictures were big, filled the page, and detailed. The word tone and pictures really portray the story line and I enjoyed how they rhymed.
I believe this book is great for someone who is questioning their identity and if they fit in because in the story you have a boy name Tyler whose mom is white and dad is black and Tyler is trying to figure out what color he is.
“My dad, my mom, and me, black, white, and... am I color too? I am a person just like you”.
This example in the text is powerful because it shows the reader that no matter what color you are that you are a person like everyone else.
Another example, “people dance in every color to the music in their hearts. People sing in every color, songs of joy with many parts”.
This example too is very powerful on a reader because again, it shows that we are all alike in many ways no matter what color we are and even if we are a different color then someone else that we are a person.
I believe that if more people read this book and the meaning behind it then we wouldn’t have so many issues of race in the world. ( )

“Am I a color Too?” does a great job with illustrations supporting the text and the rhyme throughout the book. Heidi Cole and Nancy Vogi, the authors, convey the message of identity by using race and skin color, and the idea of “we are all the same”.
First, the illustrations throughout the book support the text by using dark colors throughout the book until the ending. The dark colors show the unanswered question that Tyler asks all throughout the book of, “Am I a Color Too?”. The title shows that Tyler believes that he is only recognized for his skin tone instead of his personality and character. In the end of the book, he is shown in the middle between many different kids, in all different skin tones, showing that he is one of the same. On that page, the illustrator uses bright colors, specifically yellow, such as the sun is shining down on Tyler. And finally, Tyler’s question is answered.
In addition, with the illustrations in the book, the text is such as one is like reading a poem that rhymes all throughout. In the book the author states, “People dance in every color: To the music in their hearts. People sing in every color: songs of joy with many parts.” The book is written with this pattern all throughout the book.
The authors wrap the book with the quote, “My dad, my mom, and me, Black, White, and… am I a color too? No, my name is Tyler. I’m a person just like you.” Tyler’s answered question of his identity is that everyone is the same and just because one might look or appear different, it does not mean that they are different. In my opinion, this book deserves four stars. ( )

This is a poetic book about a mixed race child who wonders about how the world sees him, his mother and father.

“Am I a Color Too?” was a powerful nonfiction poetry book describing the feelings of a mixed child. He asks if he is a color too, and if so what color? How the story was written was the best part of this book, it had a great message that was shared repeated: “I am a Human Being, not a color, not a word. I have my hopes and dreams and a voice that will be heard.” This is a good book. Not only to help children with different skin coloration feel more comfortable in their own skin, but to help adults as well.
