He invites his nephew to come with him to see what goes on. At first the little boy is shy and uncomfortable, however, by the end of the day when he sees the impact he had on others, his attitude quickly changes. This story gives an inside perspective of what goes on in a soup kitchen and the kind of people that go there. One of the main details I enjoyed in this story were the illustrations. I felt that they were very appropriate for the mood and tone of the book. They corresponded really well with the message the author was trying to convey on each page. ( ) Based on the actual volunteer experience of the author, this picture book provides a look into the soup kitchen without an overly sentimental view of the hungry or a dose of pessimism for the reader. A boy wonders about the people he sees on his city’s streets until he goes to the soup kitchen where his uncle works. A little boy is curious as to why his uncle volunteers at a soup kitchen. The little boy does not understand why people do not just eat at home with their family. His uncle tries to explain to him that every one might not have the money to afford food. Sometimes even if they work they do not make enough money to have a home or eat dinner. Finally the little boy has a day off of school, his uncle Willie takes him to the soup kitchen. The little boy helps prepare and meets plenty of people that volunteer and the people who come eat. He enjoys it and it makes him feel happy that he helped. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
