When Jenny Starling, the travelling cook with a penchant for trouble, accepts an assignment to cook for a wealthy businessman on his luxurious river-boat, the fabulous Stillwater Sam, she sees nothing but plain sailing ahead. The River Thames is especially lovely in summer, the limited number of guests a doddle to cook for, and even her employer’s parrot has taken a fancy to her. All looks set for a peaceful and happy few days. So when someone is murdered, Jenny finds herself once again in the thick of things. And since anyone aboard could be the murderer, she’d better keep her wits about her – and her sharp knives handy!… (meer)

Having been forced to take her requisite holiday Jenny Starling takes a weekend job cooking at Wainscott House, only to find that is a weekend on a paddleboat on the River Thames. Much to Jenny's surprise and pleasure. Unfortunately the boat guests do not seem to get on with each other which does result in a death. Accident, suicide or murder. Can Jenny help the local police to get to the right conclusion.
Another enjoyable story in this well-written series with a likeable main character.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book received from Joffe Books. All thoughts and opinions are my own ( )

cosy-mystery, amateur-sleuth, women-sleuths, law-enforcement, murder-investigation

I really hoped someone would murder the blackguard but was afraid it would turn out to be another Orient Express! That's how well each character was portrayed, especially our redoubtable freelance cook who is as capable of providing excellent meals as using her observations and acute logic. The plot is twisty and diabolical, the ride on the Thames beautiful. And it made me aware of the narrowed thinking that had me thinking that paddlewheelers only cruised the Mississippi! The publisher's blurb is pretty good, but doesn't convey the clarity of it all. I read it straight through because it made me!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you for introducing me to this author's writing!
Two years later I was lucky to get the audio performed wonderfully by Charlotte Worthing. ( )

Traveling cook Jenny Starling is onto her next job. This time she will be working on a luxury boat. With just a few guests and a rather short assignment, this should be one of Jenny’s easier assignments. However, when she discovers a dead body aboard the boat, Jenny realizes that her skills as an amateur sleuth are greatly needed.

What another delightful cozy mystery. Just as in the previous books in this series, the suspect pool is quite small, so she quickly gets to work. This is rather easy to do, because she has earned a reputation with the police and they actually welcome her assistance.

As we read this engaging story by Faith Martin, it is delightful to see Jenny’s powers of deduction. As always, there is a unique assortment of characters, any one of whom who could have both motive and means to have committed the murder.

This was a quick read, with just the right amount of twists and turns to capture my interest throughout. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in this series thus far. The next book in the series is The Castle Mystery.

Formerly published as Dying for a Cruise under Faith Martin’s pen name Joyce Cato. ( )
