Among the Latin patristic texts which have most profoundly marked Western Christians, the liturgical texts certainly figure prominently. Addressing indiscriminately to all the participants in the liturgical offices returning annually, and this for centuries, these texts, often of a remarkable theological and spiritual density, exerted a lasting and very widespread influence. Disseminated and grouped differently in multiple manuscript sacramentaries spanning eleven centuries, these liturgical prayers have been collected and classified according to their incipit in a Corpus orationum, the first volume of which has just appeared. Conceived on the model of the Corpus praefationum and the Corpus benedictionum published previously, the Corpus orationum gives the critical text of some 6,000 orations, collections, secret, postcommunions and "super populum" orations, to stick to the usual terminology of the Roman rite. We will also find there the list of the manuscripts which have preserved them for us, the headings indicating the various uses to which they were assigned, the biblical and other sources and, possibly, an explanatory note. The introduction briefly describes the editions and manuscripts examined, and ends with a bibliography of around 150 titles, concerning Latin liturgical orations. All in all, an indispensable working tool for liturgists and historians of mentalities.
