Norman Mailer is a good political reporter, especially when the two main candidates are such poles apart. George McGovern versus tricky Dick Nixon. You could write out the characters of the two men and then shuffle them into two piles, one named Hillary, the other Drumpf! But the cards would have to be really shuffled. No one trusted Nixon, the ultimate and odious insider, and the good-hearted McGovern, who truly desired to serve the people was torpedoed by the fact that Thomas Eagleton his Vice Presidential running mate, had spent time under psychiatric care. Norman gives the ups and downs of the campaign in lively prose and the book is good history. ( )
