Beautiful Secret 1 Star It is hard to believe that the same authors wrote Beautiful Bastard. What the heck happened to character development, snarky dialogue, and actual plot? The heroine, Ruby, is ostensibly a smart and sassy woman, but get her within 5 feet of the huge and sexy hero, and she turns into a blubbering, idiotic nitwit. Niall Stella is the antithesis of the heroes of the first three books - awkward instead of suave, reserved instead of arrogant, and inexperienced instead of rakish. While this is endearing at first, it becomes tedious and annoying after a while. Unfortunately, Ruby and Niall have absolutely no chemistry, and other than excessive descriptions of their jobs and sexual escapades, there is virtually no story either. The audiobook narrated by Charlotte Penfield and Jonathan Cole is the only saving grace. Overall, very disappointing. Hopefully, the next and final installment will be better. I liked this more than the first in the series, primarily because the story was sweeter and dealt so well with both characters' reservations and emotions. It felt so refreshing to read about a character who'd experienced sexual assault, discussed it openly with their partner, and the story didn't play the conversation to establish a character's dark, wounded past. So many of the conversations were about boundaries, consent, etc. while not losing any of the sexual tension and flirtiness. A genuinely engaging and romantic read. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

I went through that era where I read them all, the Beautiful series, novellas included. At times it was a love hate relationship because I didn't relate to the characters. It was purely voyeurism into a distant planet. Beautiful people living in a hyper environment, New York, clever, wealthy, arrogant, confident people.
As I recall, none of the following books had quite the impact of the first one, Beautiful Bastard. ( )
