A gripping and original new young adult book set to become a monster hit. In the caged depths of an urban reservoir lives a monstrous creature. Its existence is unknown to anyone except the teenage boy who feeds it. Six years ago it was a vicious little baby, now it has grown enormous, and its rusting pen can't hold it much longer. Stephen has kept the Beast a secret against all the odds. He's got other painful secrets - like why he never sees his mother, or mentions his brother Selby, and wishes his father was dead. Stephen's life in foster care, always bad, is getting worse, and he's not a boy who plays by the rules. But his extraordinary efforts to free himself of the Beast make him a hero that readers will never forget. This thrilling teenage novel, which presents physical and psychological danger with masterful skill, and human relationships with warmth and wit, launches the career of an outstanding new writer.… (meer)

teen fiction; crocodile-loose-in-the-city-reservoir. The idea is one that's been kicked around quite a bit, but this was actually an enjoyable telling of it. Short, fast-paced, interesting characters. ( )

If it wasn't for the fact this was the only book I had at the time, I never would have finished it. Cannot recommend. ( )

Beast is a bizarre read. Stephen, our main character, has experienced a rough up bringing and is not comfortable at his current foster home. Despite his discomfort he dreads being placed in a group home when he is too old for foster care. Furthermore, he has a 12 foot beast of a problem that he knows he will not be able to take care of when he is forced to leave his current foster home. The characters feel real and the events seem plausible, despite the outlandish idea of a crocodile thriving in a cage in a reservoir in chilly England. Many have noted that this book is good for reluctant readers. Alcohol use, drug use, some mentions of porn, and the complexity of Stephen's history make this a book that is better for high schoolers than middle schoolers. ( )

Contains some profanity, but an entertaining read about a boy who has a "small" problem that has grown into a 12 foot problem!
Read it because it was recommended in one of Atwell's reading books as a great choice for reluctant readers. ( )
