"A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far--a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes" -- ""Wake up, genius." So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel. Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when he's released from prison after thirty-five years" --… (meer)

Not a bad direction for the trilogy, I really enjoy the turn this series seems to be taking. There was a little too much reflection on the first book for my taste - it some parts it made sense to look back and remind us of the first book but in some parts it just got to be excessive ( )

It took me a while to finish this book, not cause of the book, but due to studying.

Wow, this book had me on the edge of my seat, at times putting it down, and having to walk around the room to catch my breath.
Another brilliantly writing story with the characters of Bill and Holly and Jerome returning to help with another victim of the Mercedes killer (from book I in the trilogy).

Now it is just the small wait for the third in the trilogy to be released on the 7th of July. ( )

I have no idea how you follow up Mr. Mercedes with this book.
I listened on audio book so it's quite possible that reading this would have given it an additional star...however....
I do not care about fucking Jimmy Gold. I do no believe for a second that Morrey would have done all the things he did for his obsession with Jimmy Gold. And, he wasn't written as mentally screwed up enough for me to believe his obsession that lead to most of the items in the book.
I feel like a good 40-50% of the book could have just been left out since it was just Morrey continually saying the same shit over and over and over and over and over again.
Maybe I missed it, but also, how do you go into jail in 1979 and come out of jail in 2015ish and then immediately get a tech job? All that they talked about for his jobs in jail had to do with dying blue jeans and other labor.
anyway.....what a waste of time. I can see why the tv series steered away from this book entirely. ( )

For readers, one of life’s most electrifying discoveries is that they are readers—not just capable of doing it (which Morris already knew), but in love with it. Hopelessly. Head over heels. The first book that does that is never forgotten, and each page seems to bring a fresh revelation, one that burns and exalts: Yes! That’s how it is! Yes! I saw that, too! And, of course, That’s what I think! That’s what I FEEL!
A good novelist does not lead his characters, he follows them. A good novelist does not create events, he watches them happen and then writes down what he sees.
No. I was going to say his work changed my life, but that’s not right. I don’t think a teenager has much of a life to change. I just turned eighteen last month. I guess what I mean is his work changed my heart.
Shit don't mean shit.
His chief interest was in reading fiction, then trying to analyze what he had read, fitting it into a larger pattern.
